Nepotism and corruption by high profile ANC members is eating into the core of technically insolvent Emalahleni Local Municipality.

Documents in the possession of the DA proves that the municipality has become a family institution whereby individuals are employed based on who they know and not what they know.

It has been revealed to the DA that four members of the Mayoral Committee,one official who is currently employed in the Mayor’s Office and MEC Lindiwe Ntshalintshali have been instrumental in placing their family members on a list for the Traffic Officer’s Course.

These Officers are now employed by the Emalahleni Local Municipality Directorate of Community Services.

This training opportunity was never made public knowledge thus highly disadvantaging the community of Emalahleni.

The most disturbing fact is that the MEC of Arts and Culture,Honourable Lindiwe Ntshalintshali’s son, Mbuli Sthembiso’s and nephew, Sizwe Mabona’s names appear on the list as candidates and have completed the course.

Sthembiso and Mabona have now resumed duty together with other individuals who have improperly benefitted from this opportunity at the Emalahleni Traffic Department.

This is completely unacceptable and intolerable that family members of the ANC politicians have easily benefited from the system while many of the Emalahleni youth remains unemployed:

  • The Director of Community Services, Mr Selati Mathlebojane’s daughter was also on the list of candidates but failed to complete the course bringing the number down to 19/20 candidates that completed;
  • The MMC for Community Services, Cllr Derrick Skhosana’s son, Mr Lindokuhle Gift Tamale completed the course;
  • MEC Lindiwe Ntshalintshali’s son and nephew completed the course;
  • MMC Mduduzi Mswati Nkosi’s girlfriend,Barbara Mohlala completed the course;
  • MMC Thabang Mathebula’s wife, Lerato Rolele completed the course; and
  • MPAC Chairperson and MMC Cllr Jerry Djiana Mjerdza son, Mr Dumsane Djiana completed the course

The DA has no confidence that Djiana is fit to lead the MPAC committee which is responsible for oversight and holding the Executive accountable if he himself is tangled in a web of corruption.

MPAC responsibilities cannot be trusted to this individual who has no integrity.

The DA will be submitting written questions to the Municipal Manager, Mr Sizwe Mayisela demanding answers to the following:

  • Where and how the funding was made available for these 20 individuals to complete this course?
  • Why was this crucial advertisement for training opportunities not made publically advertised as required by Municipal Finance Management Act 56 of 2003 and Municipal Systems Act No 32 of 2000?

The DA will not turn a blind eye while corruption and nepotism continues to fester financially wounded and crippled Emalahleni Local Municipality.
