Date: 04 May 2017

Release: Immediate

Type: Press Statement

The DA calls on the IPID to investigate the killing of a pedestrian by Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza’s convoy.

The DA is outraged by the senseless death of the pedestrian who lost his life at the hands of yet another ANC blue-light collision.

Mabuza’s blue light brigade has become a menace on the Province’s roads and the time has come for this ego-symbol to be scrapped altogether.

The DA has been calling for the banning of blue light brigades in the province. Where we govern like in the Western Cape blue lights by public representatives have been banned.

The drivers of ANC blue-light vehicles have totally disregarded other road users including pedestrians as such many lives are lost due to their reckless driving.

Last year, Herman van Schalkwyk and Tholakele was killed in a head-on collision near Piet Retief, caused by a blue-light convoy of ANC Minister David Mahlobo. However in a reply to parliamentary question to Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Pat Ngomane, regarding such incidents in the province, the MEC refuted claims of blue-light brigade incidents.

This proves that the ANC-led government is a law unto themselves and has no regard for the lives of ordinary citizens in Mpumalanga. ANC leaders refuse to account for the dangers of their blue-lights.

We are committed to ensuring that a full-scale investigation takes place, one which establishes the contributory factors of this accident.

The DA conveys its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased.
