The DA in Mpumalanga calls on the MEC of Economic Development and Tourism, Makhosazane Masilela, to intervene and find a lasting solution to the ongoing war between Mpumalanga Tourism & Parks Agency (MTPA) and its Thaba Chweu employees.
This comes after the closure of selected tourist attractions in the Thaba Chweu region under the MTPA. These include Manyeleti, Bourkes Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels amongst others.
The DA has learnt that employees based across these attractions downed tools last week. It is alleged that their demands include permanent placement for all those in acting positions, new vehicles and the reinstatement of two suspended senior executive managers.
Previously, the DA highlighted that our tourist attractions in Mpumalanga are no longer attracting a high number of tourists. The ongoing strike has also affected stall traders based in the Thaba Chweu.
The tourism sector in the province is already struggling with heritage sites on a downward spiral. Therefore, disturbing tourist attractions in the Lowveld will have a negative financial impact.
The DA acknowledges that employees are permitted to voice their grievances in a workplace. However, such action should be within the parameters of the Labour Law.
It is of importance for the department to urgently engage with aggravated employees and relevant stakeholders. It is high time they start demonstrating commitment and leadership that is required to redeem our tourist attractions.
