DA approaches HRC over Govan Mbeki water crisis

Issued by Desiree Krantz – DA Councillor Govan Mbeki Local Municipality
18 Mar 2024 in Press Releases

The DA in Govan Mbeki will write to the South African Human Rights Commission to intervene in the municipality’s continuous water supply failures.

It is an open secret that the municipality is failing to honor their Rand Water debt. Previously the bulk supply company communicated that the municipality along with Victor Khanye Local Municipality owed a cumulative amount of R1 billion.

Disgruntled communities across the municipality are not provided with a valid explanation as to why the municipality cannot provide them with water, instead they are forced to buy water.

We reiterate that active community engagement and awareness is an important element that the municipality needs to practice. As things stand, some of our communities are without water and it is unclear as to when water tankers will be dispatched.

Residents deserve to know that the ANC’s maladministration in Govan Mbeki has been deemed as a threat to Rand Water’s financial position. Meanwhile, their unsound government practices have failed to ensure that there is a lasting solution to its water crisis.

The DA will not sit back and watch the ANC administration trample on the rights of our residents. We will make sure that the municipality takes responsibility and provides water and other services to Govan Mbeki residents.
