The DA in Chief Albert Luthuli calls on the Department of Education to urgently attend to the aging infrastructure and shortage of textbooks at Carolina Academic school.

Following an oversight, we have discovered that learners in this school are in desperate need of textbooks. Lack of books has been identified as a major challenge.

It is concerning to note that learners have to share a textbook. Not all learners are able to access the content, this has compromised their learning.  Notably, infrastructure at the school is also on the brink of collapse. Basic safety measures have been neglected.

During the oversight, these are the issues that were identified:

  • The corrugated roof is full of rust and a lot of holes;
  • The window frames are also in a bad condition;
  • The door frames are rusted and the wooden doors are broken and rotten;
  • The walls are damaged due to bad weather conditions;
  • The assembly area is also in a bad condition;
  • The pavilion structure is also in a very bad state and could collapse anytime; and
  • The school is experiencing a shortage of textbooks.

According to the school infrastructure handbook, a school environment does not meet basic safety requirements if learners are exposed to unsafe building structures that could fall on top of them at any given time.

Learning is not conducive if learners have to stand up and strain themselves to reach a textbook. Teachers are also tasked with completing a syllabus within a certain period. Therefore, all this is at jeopardy when textbooks are not enough.

The DA will make sure that the needs of learners and teachers are catered for at this school.  Adequate infrastructure is important in the quest for quality education.
