Release: Immediate

The DA in Govan Mbeki has asked the Executive Mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, to take action against the municipality’s Technical Service Department for failing to attend to potholes in Ward 21.

All major roads in Ward 21 are in a terrible condition. Residents in this area cannot enter or exit their own properties without driving through at least one pothole directly in front of their gates.

Ratepayers cannot continue to suffer because of the municipality’s failure. Being able to drive on roads without potholes has become a privilege in Govan Mbeki. It must be also noted that potholes damage tyres, wheel rims, suspension system, alignment and the undercarriage of the vehicle.

Infrastructure planning and maintenance is the mandate of the municipality. We have already observed accidents on these roads as a result of their poor condition. More hazards are likely to occur if the situation remains the same.

During our engagements with residents, they communicated that they have been forced to fill potholes themselves using cement and bricks. This is not fair, and it does not solve the issue, this is a clear sign of municipal failure.

Residents in this area have reported more than 400 photos of potholes across Ward 21. This goes to prove the widespread and severe state of road neglect in the area. This highlights the urgent need for immediate and long-term intervention.

To strengthen our call for action, we will launch a petition demanding urgent intervention from the municipality. The DA remains committed to services delivery which will improve the standard of living for residents in Govan Mbeki.
