Press statement by Aaron Khumalo – DA Councillor eMalahleni Local Municipality
-eMalahleni Municipality is failing to produce performance reports of a security company.
-Under this company, the municipality’s assets have been exposed to theft and vandalism.
-We have asked the Municipal Manager to look into this and provide the reports.

The Democratic Alliance in eMalahleni calls on the Municipal Manager, Sizwe Mayisela, to compel the relevant department to adhere to a council resolution and provide monthly
performance reports of a security company contracted to the municipality.
The company known to the DA is responsible for protecting municipal infrastructure, equipment, personnel and other facilities. Due to the rise in theft and vandalism under the watch of this security company, we have continuously questioned their capabilities and effectiveness.
Last year, the Council approved the extension of this security company’s contract for a further 12 months. Notably, the DA opposed this.
Interestingly, this extension was done on condition that monthly performance reports on the security company would be provided by the relevant department. Attempts to get these reports and the relevant department to take accountability have not been successful.
Currently, the municipality has decided to extend the contract of this security company for two months. In their defense, the municipality explained that the latest tender process did not
produce responsive bids and that the procurement process could therefore not be concluded.
The DA’s opposition to this extension is not about politics for the sake of politics. It is about accountability. Residents expect their municipal assets to be protected, and they
expect public money to be spent on services that actually work.
When municipal infrastructure is vandalised and left unprotected, businesses pay the price through disrupted services, higher costs and uncertainty. Investors are unlikely to expand or create jobs in a municipality that cannot safeguard its own assets. Protecting public infrastructure is therefore not only about accountability, but also about creating an environment where businesses can grow and employ more people.
The DA will continue to monitor the municipality’s procurement process and the performance of the service provider. We will hold the administration accountable for the protection of municipal assets and the responsible use of public funds.
