The DA calls on the Mkhondo Municipality’s Technical Service Department to urgently assess the water chemicals used at its water treatment plant. At the next Council sitting we will also table a motion in this regard.
Since the new year started, residents of Amsterdam and Piet Retief have been subject to dirty water coming out of their taps. In some parts of the municipality, residents are still confronted with continuous water outages.
The DA reached out to the manager at the water treatment plant and he revealed that the quality of chemicals used for water purification is not good enough.
Therefore, it is disturbing to note that the municipality’s water supply system is allegedly failing to obtain the right purification chemicals and produce chemical compliant water.
The municipality’s alleged negligence could lead to an outbreak of waterborne diseases as the quality of water in Mkhondo keeps deteriorating.
Recently, a number of residents marched to the municipality to discuss the ongoing water crisis. Despite the community’s effort to engage the municipality on this issue, the ANC administration has failed to take residents into confidence and take meaningful action.
The truth of the matter is that the municipality has shown lack of accountability and a blatant disregard to the needs of residents.
We will not sit back and let the residents of Mkhondo bear the brunt of poor service delivery. We will pursue every available avenue to ensure that this water crisis is urgently attended to.
