The DA in Govan Mbeki is looking forward to the upcoming motion of no confidence against the municipality’s Executive Mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma.
The DA’s motion will be deliberated at a council sitting on the 30th of January, and we are confident that through this motion Nhlakanipho Zuma will be removed from office.
Our motion comes after the mayor failed to show leadership and rise above factionalism when it mattered the most. It must be noted that currently, Zuma has turned Govan Mbeki into the worst performing ANC-led municipality in the province.
Over the years, Zuma has avoided critical service delivery questions submitted by the DA and other political parties. Through IDP engagements, residents have also raised concerns with the municipality’s water supply.
All this fell on deaf ears as he failed to take meaningful action to address the concerns that were raised by the DA, residents and other political parties. He also failed to provide accountability and direction when residents were in the grips of a serious water crisis just last year. This is a clear indication of the mayor’s unwillingness to listen to the needs of the community.
These are some of the issues the executive mayor turned a blind eye to:
The alleged missing R3 million that was meant for theatre upgrades.
The municipality spending R160 000 to upgrade the driving licence of four employees.
Senior managers’ salaries not being compliant with the remuneration framework.
The municipality misleading residents about the cause of water shortages.
The municipality’s ever increasing Eskom debt, which sits at over R5 billion.
The executive mayor’s relaxed approach in dealing with these issues and other matters has eroded trust and confidence in his ability to lead effectively; hence the DA is calling for the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality Council to support the motion.
The ANC has brought nothing but instability and financial mismanagement to this municipality. The DA is the only party with exceptional governance capabilities to change the lives of Govan Mbeki residents.
