The DA in Steve Tshwete calls on the Municipal Manager, Mandla Mguni, to urgently address the ongoing crisis with the sewerage system in Nasareth, ward 8.

Over the past couple of months, we observed blocked drains that have persisted for weeks, whereas in some other areas drains have been blocked for months. All the while Steve Tshwete lacks a honey sucker to unblock these drains.

The DA has reported the matter to the municipality on more than one occasion. However, the municipality has shown a blatant disregard towards its residents.

In some areas, the blocked drains are located inside residential households. This has become a serious health hazard for our residents as untreated sewage overflows into their yards.

It is concerning to note that from time to time, the municipality outsources  a contractor to unblock sewer drains. This highlights the municipality’s failure to provide basic service to residents.

The municipality’s ignorance speaks volumes about the ANC’s governance considering that their negligence is likely to affect water resources in some parts of this community.

Our communities deserve reliable and efficient municipal services, and it is unacceptable for residents to suffer due to negligence and poor management.

Noting these challenges, we will write to the Municipal Manager, Mandla Mguni, to urgently deploy the municipal officials to the affected areas and deal with problematic sewerage system in Nasareth.

The DA will continue holding the municipality accountable and making sure that they are responsive to the needs of the community.
