The DA in Nkangala District calls on the Executive Mayor, Thomas Ngwenya, to give a more detailed report regarding the building of a Water Purification Chemical Manufacturing Plant.
It is understood that the municipality has set aside an amount of R15 million to construct this much needed water facility. The municipality is also planning on constructing a brick factory close to this water plant.
The DA has learnt that the Nkangala Economic Development Agency (NEDA) is the implementing agent for these projects.
In his State of the District Address, Mayor, Thomas Ngwenya, described the agency as a ‘special purpose’ vehicle for economic transformation and job creation in the district.
Noting the continuous water challenges municipalities in the Nkangala district are faced with, the DA approached the agency’s top management for an update on the water plant project. To our surprise, the agency was unable to outline their plans and vision for this project.
Therefore, the DA is concerned that the municipality’s commitment to fight unemployment and better the livelihoods of residents in the district might turn out to be another PR exercise and empty promise made by ANC politicians.
Residents deserve to know that the ANC led Nkangala District Municipality has failed to be a functional engine that provides oversight and support to its local municipalities.
We will not sit back and let the residents of Nkangala District Municipality bear the brunt of poor service delivery. We will pursue every available avenue to ensure that these projects are carried out timeously.
