The DA in Mkhondo sympathises with the residents of Piet Retief who have been left destitute by heavy storms over the weekend.
This comes after the municipality experienced heavy rains that caused damage to roads, buildings, infrastructure and properties.
Currently, there are no fatalities reported. However, we expect the government to act promptly and consider amplifying flood preventive measures.
We call on the province’s disaster management unit to assist in obtaining tarps that can be used as a temporary measure to cover these damaged houses and businesses.
Noting the severity of this storm, we also call for the allocation of resources for immediate relief. This includes building material for reconstruction of houses, food, blankets and medical supplies.
We will closely monitor the government’s work in restoring the damaged infrastructure and make sure that things are done by the book when this process gets underway.
The DA will continue to assist the affected communities. We also urge residents to exercise caution and maintain their safety as more rain is expected in the province.
