The Democratic Alliance Women’s Network in Mpumalanga is saddened by the increasing number of child abandonment cases in Govan Mbeki Local Municipality.

On the 29th of July, 7th and 14th of August this year, three babies were dumped in Govan Mbeki Local Municipality. In this regard, one case was reported in Leandra and the remaining two cases were reported in eMbalenhle. Sadly, all three of these babies were found dead.

Equally concerning is the fact that between January to December 2023, the province reported 17 cases of child abandonment.

Although we do not know the circumstances which led to these three cases, we understand that the increasing cost of living and related hardships might have been a contributing factor.

We need proper education for desperate mothers. They must know that there are better options for them. DAWN Mpumalanga advises women to contact a social worker and seek assistance or to approach safe houses who can help them.

With this in mind, we will write to the municipality’s Community Service Division to increase awareness around this issue and to draft programs that will assist new mothers.
