The DA in Thaba Chweu calls on the MEC of CoGTA, Speedy Mashilo, to crack the whip on the municipality’s Corporate Service Department and ensure that they intensify the filling of vacant positions.

According to the latest quarterly report on Corporate Service the municipality has a total of 130 vacant positions. Notably, this number has increased from the previous financial year.

The vacant positions are spread across Finance, Technical and Engineering, Community Service, and Local and Economic Planning amongst others.

The Director for Corporate Service, Peter Mankga, has informed our member in the Portfolio Committee that the municipality is battling with validating candidates’ experience through their listed references.

However, the DA believes that this is a misrepresentation of the truth. Like any other ANC-led municipality, Thaba Chweu is the hub of cadre deployment. There is an urgent need to accelerate service delivery in Thaba Chweu. Our residents need employees that will be responsive to their needs.

The municipality’s IDP public participation has clearly indicated that residents are tired of lack of service delivery as these meetings were boycotted. Therefore, prioritizing the filling of these vacant positions will go a long way in alleviating some of their challenges. It is disappointing that from time to time residents have to take to the streets and demand basic services.

It has become clear that the ANC in Thaba Chweu has failed to provide a democratic and accountable government for communities. Municipalities are the sphere of government closest to the people and they have a mandate of acting in the best interest of residents at all times.

The DA will continue holding the ANC administration accountable. We will not sit back and watch Illogical practices of the ANC collapse services in Thaba Chweu.
