Dark streets in Gholfsig compromises residents’ safety

Issued by Elsie Vermooten – DA Councilor Steve Tshwete Local Municipality

The DA in Steve Tshwete has called on the Director of Electrical Engineering Service, Ntokozo Gubevu to urgently address dysfunctional street lights in Gholfsig, ward 14.

Notably, this ward boasts a golf course with leisure and recreation facilities. The Country Club also welcomes visitors from neighboring towns.

Yet, amidst the lush greens, a shadow looms large over the streets of Clubville and Gholfsig with darkness that extends far beyond the facility’s entrance.

For too long, ratepayers in this ward have been left to navigate the night in darkness. This is due to malfunctioning street lights. Despite promises of service and action, nothing has been done to alleviate the situation.

A year ago, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) members and concerned residents, meticulously compiled a list of street lights that need repairs and submitted it to the local authorities. However, the municipality has failed to dispatch a team of technicians to attend to the crisis.

The situation is dire as lamp poles in this ward are stripped to the core. The safety and well-being of residents is at stake. The lack of adequate lighting poses a significant risk to the safety of residents.

The DA finds it disturbing and inexcusable that the municipality’s Infrastructure Development Services department is yet to establish a plan on how to deal with its infrastructure and mitigate against such challenges.

We will not tolerate any form of incompetence in Steve Tshwete. The municipality needs to prioritize such services and review its infrastructure with the view to improve it.
