The DA in Victor Khanye calls on the MMC of Planning, Infrastructure, Transport and Safety, Tebogo Malomane, to urgently assess and upgrade road infrastructure.

The main road networks throughout the municipality are quickly deteriorating because the infrastructure was originally designed for low volume traffic. This was also substantiated in the municipality’s annual report which indicated that the levels of traffic have increased due to growth within the industrial, mining and farming sector.

It has come to light that main routes in the municipality operate at capacity and at times beyond capacity, resulting in traffic congestion. The Roads infrastructure within the urban edge of Delmas has aged and needs to be upgraded or reconstructed.

Victor Khanye is linked by a major freeway, the N12, declared the Maputo Corridor. The municipality is also regarded as a gateway to the Gauteng Province and boasts important sectors such as agricultural product processing, industrial and manufacturing.

Natural resources make a significant and direct contribution to the Municipalities economy. Therefore, in order to nourish these sectors and attract potential investors the municipality should ensure that our main road networks are up to standard.

According to the municipality, heavy haulage traffic continues to deteriorate roads surfaces. However, this can be attributed to the increase in coal mining and related activities.

Following an assessment on our main routes, we have established that road signages such as stop signs, speed limit signs, pedestrian crossing signs, speed humps and other important road signs have faded and some are hardly legible.

The DA will engage MMC Malomane and advise him to consider funding from the provincial government and the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG). Strengthening our main road networks will have a positive impact on the local economy.

We will continue advocating for excellent government practices that will benefit residents across Victor Khanye.
