The DA in Steve Tshwete calls on the Mandla Mguni, to ensure that water is evenly distributed to residents of Doornkop.
Over the years, the municipality has failed to find a way to ensure that the supply of water in Doornkop is improved so that it can cater for all the residents.
Boreholes provided by the municipality are not effective. It came to light that illegal connections disrupt the water pressure, leading to an insufficient supply through the taps. Cable theft is also a challenge that cuts off water supply.
The municipality relies on water tanker trucks to fill Jojo tanks erected in the area. However, these are not spread evenly in the village, some areas have no Jojo tanks.Overall, the trucks cannot keep up with the demand.
Most of the roads are in poor condition, the municipality refuses to grade the roads, citing that it is private land. The tankers are in a poor condition and lose water as they come from town, at times more than one truck is broken down.
It is unacceptable for elderly people and young children to travel a distance of over 8 km with a wheelbarrow to go and collect water.
The lack of water in the Doornkop and Sebesho villages have forced the community to travel to the next village of Mampimpane to fetch water with wheelbarrows. This puts huge pressure on the main systems Mampimpane, often emptying the reservoir.
It is therefore concerning to note that some people have taken advantage of the situation by selling water to residents. The DA reiterates that the influx of people to Doornkop calls for an urgent intervention from the municipality. It is unacceptable for residents to be deprived of water, a basic human right.
Unemployment is at its peak in this village, thus it is illogical to expect these residents to buy water.
The DA will not sit back and watch the ANC administration trample on the rights of these residents. We will make sure that the municipality takes responsibility and provides water and other services to residents of Doornkop.
