The DA in Steve Tshwete has learnt that Eskom is no longer providing ambulances and other services that they previously administered to the community of Rietkuil.

This is an Eskom village that falls under Ward 7 in Steve Tshwete residents in this community pay rates and taxes.

The municipality renders services such as water, sewerage, electricity, and refuse removal.

On the other hand, Eskom supplied the community with water for the fire hydrants, swimming pool and the clubhouse.

Throughout the years, the power supply company ensured that a functional and competent ambulance was available for this community. However, this service was abruptly cut off without an explanation.

Even more concerning, residents in this community have to transport themselves to Middelburg Hospital with private cars. The population of Rietkuil mainly consists of elderly people who need efficient ambulances. Furthermore, they do not have any medical aid plan and do not have access to private ambulance services.

The safety and protection of this community is also compromised as they do not have a satellite police station on sight. For over five years now, the municipality and the relevant stakeholders have been engaged in negotiations over the possibility of providing this community with a satellite police station and clinic.

Commercial businesses in this area have their work cut out in dealing with criminals. House break-ins are also on the rise and perpetrators are not held accountable. Last year, the owner of SPAR survived an attempted robbery when criminals shot through the windows of his vehicle. Luckily, he escaped unharmed.

Previously, the municipality oversaw a project responsible for changing street names in this community. However, there was no cohesion amongst stakeholders involved, and as a result, the new names were never recorded on the database despite the change of names on the pavements.

The disgruntled community deserves adequate service delivery. It’s unfortunate that Eskom has turned their back on this community.

The DA will start a petition calling on Eskom and the municipality to establish a stable Emergency Management Service that will cater for the community of Rietkuil.
