The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the condemnation of the selling of RDP houses in Emalahleni Municipality by the MEC of Human Settlement, Ms Norah Mahlangu. However, the Municipal Manager (MM) Mr Sizwe Mayisela has long known of the situation and has failed to act.

This act of corruption was brought to the MM’s attention on 20 February 2020, when the DA requested an urgent investigation into the sale of RDP houses.

However, to date there has been no action taken by the MM and his only response is that RDP housing is a provincial issue and needs to be addressed by the Department of Human Settlement.

The DA submitted evidence whereby it emerged that some recipients were advertising the sale of RDP houses on the internet and all over social media platforms and despite the factual evidence being submitted to him, he simply turned a blind eye.

RDP Housing is a thorny issue countrywide and it has become a commercial activity for corrupt politicians and dishonest recipients alike.

The MM has failed in his capacity as the Accounting Officer in conducting an investigation into these corrupt activities.

This is indicative of the fact that he simply has no willpower to stop corrupt activities and neglects his core function as the Accounting Officer.

The DA will continue fighting for houses meant for the poorest of the poor to be handed freely to them without interference of corrupt politicians who wish to benefit financially.

Once again, the DA calls upon the MM, Mr Mayisela to conduct an urgent investigation into the sale of RDP houses by undeserving recipients, corrupt officials and politicians who are robbing deserving individuals of a roof over their heads.

The DA will not tolerate corruption and those found guilty of engaging in corrupt activity should face the full might of the law.
