Date: 15 August 2017
Release: Immediate
Type: Press Statement
The DA is deeply saddened by the death of Ms Kate Chiloane, the teacher from Sedibasathuto Primary School in Bushbuckridge who tragically lost her life on Monday. According to police reports, Ms Chiloane was shot twice in front of learners while fleeing from her husband following an argument. The husband later committed suicide at home.
It is extremely concerning that such an act of violence would take place during this month of August when the nation is calling for an end to women abuse. Worse still, school children were made to witness this senseless act of brutality.
The DA welcomes the Department of Education’s swift action in deploying officials from the wellness section to render counselling services to the learners, educators and family members. We also hope that the Department of Community Safety Security and Liaison intensifies all efforts to protect women and children from abuse.
I wish to once again express our sincere condolences to Ms Chiloane’s family, the learners, and the community of Bushbuckridge. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
