DA calls on Premier Mabuza to make farm dwellers Inquiry recommendations public

22 September 2016

Release: immediate

The DA in Mpumalanga calls on Premier David Mabuza to make public the commission of Inquiry report on the socio-economic conditions of farm dwellers.

The commission which was allocated a budget of R10 million, was establish last September and completed its work this week and handed over the report to the Premier.

Most farms in Mpumalanga handed over to previously disadvantaged communities are struggling on their own because the government has abandoned them to their own devices.

These farms are no-longer producing the necessary resources and this has led to many people losing their jobs but still living on farm lands in abject poverty.

One of the recommendations that was made public is the establishment of a unit within the office of the Premier to solve the problems identified by the commission.

The DA has reservations about the proposed unit, until such time that the Premier makes the report public. These recommendations could be absorbed by government departments, in order to avoid spending more money.

It is common knowledge that the plight of both farmers and farm workers needs attention urgently.

Their cries have been falling on deaf ears since the dawn of democracy in our country. Farmers and Farm workers alike are at the receiving end of government’s indecisiveness and the lack of political will to act on issues affecting them.

Premier Mabuza must act on the report soonest, and implement the necessary measures to improve the lives of farmers and farmworkers without spending more taxpayers’ money.
