The DA in Ehlanzeni District Municipality calls for an investigation into the procurement of generators by Nkomazi Local Municipality

Recently, we have established that the ANC-led Nkomazi wasted taxpayers’ money with generators that were purchased two years ago.  Although the municipality spent up to R900 000, these generators  are still not connected to the municipality’s electricity grid.

Even more concerning is that the critical pre-start installation inspections have not been conducted, rendering the equipment vulnerable to operational failures. Especially since the standard two-year manufacturer guarantee has since expired.

There are also allegations that some of these generators, which were intended to ensure essential services for residents, have been placed at the private residences of municipal officials. If these allegations are true, this blatant misuse of public resources is unacceptable.

As a result of this failure, residents continue to suffer prolonged water shortages, as power outages continues to disrupt access to clean drinking water, compounding the hardship faced by the community.

In our letter we demand:

  • Immediate inspections and completion of all pending generator installations to secure uninterrupted water and electricity services.
  • A full audit to determine the locations of all municipal generators, including those allegedly placed at private residences.
  • Accountability and consequences for officials found guilty of misconduct or negligence.

It is time for transparency and efficiency in Nkomazi. Service delivery should be non-negotiable, residents deserve better than the ongoing chaos and mismanagement that undermine their quality of life.

The DA will not rest until this matter is fully investigated and resolved in the best interest of the community.
