The DA in Victor Khanye is petitioning the MMC for Infrastructure, Transport and Safety, Tebogo Malomane, to urgently attend to dilapidated and under capacitated road networks throughout the municipality.
Victor Khanye road infrastructure was originally designed for low traffic volumes. As the years went by, the volume of traffic increased due to growth within the industrial, mining and farming sectors. This also added to the movement of heavy vehicles which damaged road surface because they were not designed to carry heavy loads.
Victor Khanye is linked by a major freeway, the N12, which is declared the Maputo Corridor. The municipality is also regarded as a gateway to the Gauteng province and boasts important sectors such as agricultural product processing, industrial and manufacturing.
Natural resources make a significant and direct contribution to the municipality’s economy.
Therefore, in order to nourish this sector and attract potential investors, the municipality should ensure that our main road networks are up to standard. Strengthening our main road networks will have a positive impact on the local economy.
Given the above, it cannot be that the main routes in the municipality operate at capacity and at times beyond capacity, resulting in traffic congestion. The road infrastructure within the urban edge of Delmas has aged and needs to be upgraded or reconstructed.
Recognising these issues in our petition, we also urge the municipality to rework road signs such as stop signs, speed limit signs, pedestrian crossing signs, speed humps and other important road signs that have faded.
The municipality’s excuse that funding is a challenge cannot be accepted any longer. Ratepayers deserve services, not excuses. The ANC administration in this municipality needs to start demonstrating the commitment and leadership that is required to restore confidence in the delivery of these essential services.
We will not tolerate incompetence, the municipality needs to start prioritising its infrastructure. We will continue advocating for excellent government practices that will benefit Victor Khanye residents.
