In the next council sitting, the DA in Mkhondo will table a motion calling on the municipality to prioritise stormwater infrastructure in Ward 13.

This comes after recent rains caused severe destruction to resident’s homes, because there are no stormwater drains to channel raging waters away from people’s homes.

Despite this being a natural disaster, the DA finds it unacceptable that the municipality failed to show up for these residents when they were confronted with damage to their properties.

During an oversight, the affected families expressed fear and uncertainty as they stated that the conditions of their houses is worrisome. The municipality’s slow approach in attending to the lack of  stormwater infrastructure has inconvenienced the livelihoods of residents.

To assist people who have been affected by this issue, the DA dug some trenches to divert rainwater away from people’s homes. It is puzzling as to how the municipality utilises its emergency funding. We believe that repairs for essential basic services and infrastructure should always be prioritised.

The ANC in Mkhondo has failed to live up to their mandate and provide the most basic services to all of their residents. The DA reiterates that infrastructure related projects should be carried out expeditiously with fairness and transparency.

The DA will not relent until the municipality takes action. Residents occupying these houses have been subject to nothing but misery.  We remain the only viable solution for residents of Mkhondo.
