The DA in Mpumalanga will urgently write to the MEC of Education, Cathy Dlamini, asking her to equally prioritise schools catering for learners with special needs.
This comes after it emerged that all fifteen deaf learners who wrote their 2024 matric examinations at Bukhosibetfu Boarding School could not pass their exams.
Last year, during an oversight visit to the Nkomazi based boarding school, we were informed that the 15 learners did not have a qualified teacher to assist them with their exam preparations.
After following up with the department, we were informed that they have already organised two experienced teachers from KZN. The department further communicated that the teachers taught the learners only during the July holidays with their final exam preparation.
The DA finds it illogical that learners with special needs were not granted enough time to prepare for such an important examination. It is clear the Department has failed these learners.
The truth of the matter is that the Department of Education in Mpumalanga has not prioritized special needs schooling. This is also exacerbated by the fact that since 2011 the department has been battling with building a suitable school for the deaf and blind. Apparently they will start building this year but we not holding our breath
It was stated at a committee meeting that it will cost private sponsors R800 Million to build such a school and that it will take between 8-10 years to complete it.
In essence, if a learner is 8 years old now, he/she will not have the privilege to attend the school as 10 years later they will be 18 years old and be writing their final exam.
The department’s approach towards special needs schooling is concerning. The education of learners with special needs schooling should also be prioritized. All deaf learners should be catered for from the foundational phase up to Grade 12. The DA will continue to fight for equal education for every learner.
