The DA in Govan Mbeki welcomes the municipality’s commitment to investigate the situation where officials paid R160 000 to upgrade the driving licence of four employees.
A report that was presented to council over a month ago indicated the exorbitant amount was paid to a Secunda based driving school. The report further indicated that these four employees were trained over a 20-day period.
The municipality’s decision caused public outcry with many questioning the amount spent on these driver’s licences.
In a press conference that was held yesterday, the Executive Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma emphasized that it is of importance for the municipality to upskill their employees whenever necessary. Zuma confirmed that the municipality will look into the driver’s licence saga to establish if there was something untoward.
It is concerning to note that it had to take backlash from the public and extensive media coverage for the municipality to realize that there is something suspicious with this transaction.
The failure of the current ANC administration in this municipality has impacted negatively on service delivery. Ratepayers have been subject to mediocre services for far too long.
We will closely monitor the investigation with the hope that officials who are implicated in any wrongdoing will be brought to book.
