The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Govan Mbeki Local Municipality calls on the Department of CoGHSTA to urgently intervene in the stalled upgrades at Sijongile Ndamase Community Hall which is situated in Embalenhle.
Last year, the executive mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, explained that an appointed contractor was going to build a security house, install a fence around the hall and thereafter begin with the necessary renovations.
It has been a year since the ANC administration promised the residents that the renovations at the hall would take place. However, up until now only the fence was erected.
The community hall remains abandoned and vandalized with broken windows, broken doors, plumbing leaks, broken toilets and damaged walls.
The community hall is meant to provide the following opportunities to the community:
* Educational programmes facilitated by the municipality and other stakeholders.
* To serve as a multi-purpose facility and facilitate activities in the community.
* To provide a centre for public engagement, where important information and ideas are shared.
* And to provide a support system for community projects which include, community gardening services, substance abuse awareness programmes and facilitating of clean-up programmes.
Over the years, the ANC administration has been making empty promises on a number of failed projects in Govan Mbeki. Given the above, it is clear that the notion that the municipality strives for excellence, transparency, openness and responsiveness is misleading.
Following numerous failed attempts at engaging Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, we will write to the Department of CoGHSTA and ask them to make sure that the renovations at this facility are prioritized.
